Our stop motion animation project is on the horizon. In preparation for this exciting research, production and presentation of your summarized skill from this class, I want you to do the following for May 14th class:

1. Choose 2-3 of the final videos selected by the jury on the youtube.com/play (2010) website from the total 24. Prepare a 2 minute explanation of why you like them and what makes them stand out as “new” and “cutting edge.”

2. Put up two more (specifically) stop motion animation videos on your blog that inspire you and may act as guides for how you want to make your project.

I will put specs about the project on my website soon but wanted to give you this information first.

Final due date: Wednesday, June 6th
Critique and pot-luck*

* I want you to bring in a food that relates to your video piece for the potluck. However, let’s make it a little more fun than that. Bring your food in a paper bag so not to distinguish it from the others. It will be a mystery game as well.

In 2010 the Guggenheim Museum (contemporary art mecca) hosted a controversial competition in conjunction with YouTube. The competition was what are the best videos being made that are pushing the system. In preparation for your stop motion assignment, I want you to watch all 24 videos. We are going to have a discussion about them and use them as inspiration for this final assignment.

There are different ways to illustrate and it is important you find a style that suites you. However, it does not need to be hard or complicated!

After doing the Mesh Tool assignment you will be creating a series (of 3) figurines in a serial theme. The style will be close to the following 2D puzzles by illustrator Ingela P Arrhenius. Research: Link 1 & Link 2.

I have also included another style of character design by illustrator Andrew Kolb. His sets are inspirational for this assignment as well. See the total website here.

As beginning Illustrator students you will be mastering the MESH tool as well as creating a series of (3) puzzle figurines. I have included examples of both so you can start thinking about what you want to do.

Mesh Tool Assignment:

Using a product from the Alessi website, recreate it in its entirety, mainly only using the Mesh Tool. First is an example of a student’s after and before, then examples of Alessi products.

Co.Create brings us a great review of Newsweek’s current advertisement campaign– in honor of the much anticipated television show, Mad Men, season premier. Here is author Joe Berkowitz’s write up:

“Next Sunday marks the highly anticipated return of AMC’s Mad Men after nearly two years off the air. Today Newsweek unveiled its Mad Men-themed issue, complete with retro cover design and, of course, ads.

While a few advertisers (like Johnnie Walker) anted up with authentic period ads, most brands created new ads in era-appropriate style. Still others went in a different direction–Tide, for instance, uses a modern look in an ad that embodies the psychedelic spirit of the ’60s.”
